Temperature and humidity considerations

High-temperature environments can have adverse effects and, in some cases, lead to the premature failure of components. Furthermore, operating a device outside its specified range (parameters) may have a significant impact on its performance. In low-temperature environments, the viscosity of the filling fluid may increase, whereas in high-temperature environments, there is a risk that the fluid could vaporize. Fluctuations in ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure can also act as factors that influence measurement accuracy. These effects become particularly pronounced when the transmitter’s calibration span (measurement range) is set to a very narrow band relative to its maximum measurement limit. Atmospheric conditions—such as direct sunlight or strong winds—can cause the transmitter to heat up or cool down, potentially hindering the device’s proper operation. Moreover, prolonged exposure to high-humidity environments carries the risk of corrosion to the transmitter’s housing and mounting hardware. The transmitter’s housing is designed to protect the internal electrical components from moisture ingress caused by high humidity.

 

Wire, digital or wireless

For most applications where power supply is readily available, two-wire transmitters often represent the most practical choice.

Because current signals are immune to variations in transmission line resistance, they enable reliable long-distance signal transmission. However, in scenarios requiring the transmission of high-precision or massive datasets, the use of digital transmitters may constitute the optimal solution. Given that wiring and installation costs can account for nearly 50% of the total equipment cost, it is—whenever conditions permit—a prudent decision from both economic and technical perspectives to utilize wireless devices as much as possible.

Historically, the scope of wireless device application was largely confined to specific specialized domains within remote facilities—such as water supply systems or the oil and gas extraction industry.

Today, thanks to the advent of the WirelessHART protocol, the industrial sector now possesses a globally recognized standard; this standard enables wireless instrumentation to transmit a wealth of standardized information across an entire plant network.

 

Diaphragm seals

Direct-mount and remote diaphragm seals are utilized to isolate pressure transmitters from process conditions that would otherwise shorten their service life and/or severely compromise their performance.

Consequently, they represent an ideal choice for a wide range of pressure measurement applications—specifically those involving process fluids characterized by extreme temperatures, high corrosivity, heavy contamination, high viscosity, or the presence of substantial solid particulates. Such particulates could potentially clog, contaminate, or cause the process fluid to solidify within the impulse lines and the transmitter body. Furthermore, these seals offer an effective solution in applications requiring specific wetted materials—such as Diaflex, anti-stick and corrosion-resistant PFA coatings, or specialized alloys designed for use with highly corrosive fluids. For sanitary processes—such as those found in the pharmaceutical, food, and beverage industries—remote diaphragm seal transmitters also provide an ideal solution, as these sectors typically require that pressure measurement instrumentation does not come into direct contact with the product being measured.
